I talk to people everyday who dream of quitting their job and starting a business. I am convinced that everyone hates their job. I have spent the past two years studying the job market and philosophizing on the future of work and I am convinced that you should quit your job. All of you.
Here is why you should quit your job:
Most Jobs Suck.
51% of jobs pay less than $30,000 and 40% of full-time workers are living under the poverty line. This means that the majority of jobs will not pay you a living wage.
2. Freelancers Make More Money.
In most countries, Freelancers earn more than the average worker.Freelancers in the United States averaged $39,000 a year. Freelancers are able to charge higher rates for their time, which gives them the ability to earn a full-time salary with flexible hours. And companies save tons of money hiring freelancers because they dont have to pay for expensive benefits.
3. Companies are cutting costs.
There are huge changes happening in every single industry you can imagine. The medical industry is freaking out about the changes in health insurance. Retailers are failing to compete with online shopping. Large corporations are struggling to innovate and jobs are getting cut. No one has job stability right now because industries are shifting too quickly. Companies are cutting costs, scaling down and figuring out how to pivot their business.
4. Most Americans are Going to be Self-Employed.
There are 42 Million Independent Workers in the US right now. It is predicted that 40% of the workforce will be self-employed by 2020. Companies are laying people off and hiring more independent workers. Startups are revolutionizing the way people find freelance work, and the future of work is going to be independent. Now is the time to make the shift.
5. You want your freedom.
Let’s admit it. You would love to work at home and control your own hours and only do work that you really enjoy. You are just scared that you wont be able to do it. Jobs give us stability. They are comfortable. They give us an idea of what our daily life will look like. Running your business is nothing like that. How will you find clients? How will you earn money? What if you fail? It is up to you and you alone to figure out where your next paycheck will come from. And that is scary stuff.
I believe that we are all meant to do something special in the world. Each person has a different combination of strengths and weaknesses and experience and insight. It is this mix of personality that makes each of us special. There is nothing more fulfilling that figuring out what you are meant to do in the world, and making it happen. And I believe that you can do it. Each and everyone of you.
